A Minnesota Month for Huckabee, Countdown to February 5th

Today, January 7, 2008, marks the official beginning of Mike Huckabee's campaign in Minnesota with a press confrence at 2:30 in St. Paul. The next month, until the evening of February 5th, marks the potential and opportunity for a grass roots campaign in Minnesota like we probably have not seen in years.

It will be our goal to reach thousands of voters in the span of one month. I will work in particular to reach college aged voters and I will work to enlist college aged supporters of Mike across the state in my effort to prove that Mike is the best candidate for the next greatest generation of Americans. There is no doubt that some of the other campaigns are more entrenched here and, as expected, better financed. None of that mattered in Iowa, however, and hopefully none of it will matter here. We are going to bring Mike's message to people across the state and let them support him on the basis of what he stands for and where he will lead our country.

Listen...here's my take on the pro-life issue...Romney was never personally anything but pro-life. What happened when he ran for office in liberal Massachusetts is he said in effect: "I'm personally pro-life, but I understand the 'law of the land' and the large majority in this state are pro-choice. I will not work to change the law in this regard." But when he was actually in office and presented with specific decisions related to abortion, he always acted in the pro-life way (hence the endorsement of the Massachusetts for Life Coalition). Now that he's in a national race rather than MA specific, he is able to say to a different constituency: "I am pro-life and would work on behalf of the pro-life cause as president." Also you could argue that he did more good for the pro-life cause in the hostile territory of Massachusetts than he ever could have had he not approached it as he did and won the governorship. Actions speak louder that words. Romney ACTED in a strongly pro-life manner when he had the opportunity to do so.

barb, thanks for the link...I will look at it and my wife also.

One additional thought if it's OK, a quote today from commentator Hugh Hewitt: "Rush, Sean and others have been articulating the reasons behind the decision to (1) strongly favor Romney over McCain, and (2) abandon Huckabee or Paul immediately. Romney favors victory in the war as does McCain, but Romney also favors tax cuts, the end of the death tax, entitlement reform, originalist judicial picks in the mold of Roberts and Alito, and exploration in ANWR while opposing Z Visas and the climate change hysteria that infuses McCain-Lieberman.

There is a compelling case for voting for Romney over McCain, and it got even more compelling with news that Obama raised a stunning $32 million in January, while John McCain was struggling to gather in $7 million. It will be very, very difficult to defeat Barack Obama with an old face from inside the Beltway, even one with the heroism and courage that John McCain embodies. To beat this phenomenon --there is much to write about why it exists and what it represents later-- will require communication skills, energy, and yes lots of money, far beyond what Senator McCain can likely muster.

I'll sign up for McCain if he is the nominee, but it will be with the same sort of sense of gloom that pervaded the Dole campaign in 1996.

Which is why Rush, Sean, and Laura, Beck, Levin and Hewitt are right, and Arnold, Rudy, and Rick Perry are wrong: Conservatives have to decide right now if they will fight for Romney and the party of Reagan against the MSM-generated McCain resurrection. I think they will, and that Super Tuesday will be one for the books with surprises as great as the chattering class has had to digest in a long, long time."

If you can listen to this audio link I think it makes good points from Rick Santorum. http://hotair.com/archives/2008/02/01/audio-rick-santorum-and-laura-ingraham-endorse-mitt-romney/

I appreciate that you all are viewing my blog, but quite clearly, I am a firm supporter of Mike Huckabee's. You could never ever convince me to vote for a man like Mitt Romney who spends and spends and spends. That is SO far out of touch with the reality that many people in this country experience everyday. There are far more people in this country working for CEO's that there are CEO's with people working for them. Mike Huckabee speaks best to those of us who work multiple jobs to make ends meet, cherish life at all levels from birth to death, and really want somebody from among us to lead this country. Sure, Romney or McCain may win (although I certainly hope not) but the long term trend in our party that we must recognize is to stop appealing to the most wealthy among us, but instead to appeal to all of us. Who can better win the African American vote, Romney or Huckabee? Immigrants who understand that Huckabee wants to protect Americans and their interests, but that he also has a backbone and is human at the same time.
Like I say, I do appreciate your comments here, it is a great symbol that people in our party and our country really care about this process. Still, I have my candidate and I will work my hardest to ensure people consider the candidate who is really most like them.

will,
I do respect your position, and I may not convince you otherwise, but just a couple of thoughts:

1) I think we always do a disservice when we pit one group of Americans against another. That kind of politics became a big time trend under FDR in the 1930's, and you see it in full force in the Democrats' race with division by race and gender and economic status. Also termed "class warfare" it just seems to divide people into interest groups (think of John Edwards here). The Democrats do that best. I say we leave it to them!

2) The other thing that conservatives and Republicans generally haven't done is have a negative attitude toward success or resentment towards success gained by effort, skill and dedication. I think what all of us really want is opportunity...a decent job to make a living and provide for our families, a chance to work out our lives as we wish to. Whatever it takes to make our overall economy strong gives that opportunity to more and more people. I think Romney has the knowledge and skills to lead our economy to be the strongest it can possibly be. My life isn't any worse just because Bill Gates is super rich. I don't begrudge him his money or success. But I'm glad that thousands of people have decent jobs and opportunity because of the company he created.

Those are some of my thoughts, anyway. Thanks for blogging! This is good stuff.

will, barb...
Hey, Sean Hannity just had both Zogby and Rasmussen on his show - two of the most prominent pollsters in America - and in their words, as they look at the poll numbers across the country, Mike Huckabee has "no chance" of becoming the Republican nominee, but he does have a very real chance of being a spoiler for Romney and handing it to McCain.

SO NOW THE CANDIDATE DECIDES FOR ME?
Hey folks,
I hope you have seen the letter Gov. Huckabee sent to McCain challenging him to the debate.
And the petition to sign in support.
Here is the link to it http://www.mikehuckabee.com/?FuseAction=Blogs.View&Blog_id =1517
Senator McCain has lost my respect completely by first acting like he knew nothing about Gov. Huckabees challenge and now saying he does not think he will need to debate Huckabee.

Who does he think he is? This man acts like he is the only republican candidate Americans have to choose from.
I would love to ask him in person when my vote became his.
What other rights would I lose if he were our President?
